A Series of Local Orienteering Events

A series of low key local events on a Saturday morning, in and around Tyneside, with a league to encourage participation and competition. Courses suitable for beginners (advice will be available) and the more experienced wanting some training competition.

Yellow (1.5 - 2.0 km.) ~ Orange (2.0 - 3.0 km.) ~ Long Orange (3.5 - 5.0 km.).

Maps ands Controls
Sites will be marked with a miniature O sign and orange tape secured with a clothes peg. Markers will have a code letter in permanent marker to be written on the control card. Carry a pen.

100 points for the winner of each course, 99 for second, 98 for third etc. Anyone running in a course above their class will get a bonus of 5 points (10 for 2 courses above) and, likewise, anyone running a course below their class will be docked 5 points (10 for 2 courses below).

Oct. 27thSilverlink, North Tyneside -----
Exit A19 at Holystone junction. Take A191 exit ("New York & Colbalt)
Forward over the West Allotment roundabout (2nd exit), still on A191.
Take the right hand lane to the next roundabout & the 2nd exit for The Silverlink North Road.
The off road car park is on the left opposite the Village Hotel (NE27 0BY) on the right.
Local traffic from the coast take A191
Bus 309 Newcastle - Whitley Bay/Blyth adjacent. (every 15 mins)
Metro: Northumberland Park + Bus 19 (9:31 / 10:01) to Village Hotel or 1100m. on foot.
Small but pleasant country park. Prominent hill with art feature on top. Intricate path network.
Some water and rock features. Long orange will include some street running round the Colbalt Business Park.
Long orange includes mandatory crossings of the 3 larger roads: traffic lights, zebra crossing & traffic island crossing. Please take care. Long orange not suitable for <16s due to to these crossings.

By car, from the north, cross the Redheugh Bridge (A189), keeping left (overhead "Gateshead Town Centre).
On slip road keep right to take exit 3 (small sign "Teams") off the major roundabout & pass Shell Garage on your left.
At the mini roundabout turn right and follow the road round a sharp left bend into Tyne Road East.
Shortly as this road kinks left, the park entrance is on your right.
From the east along Askew Road (A184) at the major roundabout take the 2nd exit ("Teams" as above)
From the west and A1 Western Bypass junction 69 ) take 1st exit (Teams" as above)
Local traffic from Bensham Bank along Cuthbert St. at the mini roundabout keep ahead.
Bus 54 (Saltwell Park) stops in Cuthbert St. outbound from Newcastle (every 10 mins)
Bus 53 returns to Newcastle from Askew Road West opposite the Shell Station.(every 11 mins.)
Terrain: From Dunston Staithes to the High Level Bridge, there is the riverside path, a small housing estate which
is crossed but otherwise out of bounds, then woodland paths - mostly tarmac - with a number of open areas,
the slopes down to the river, the supports for various Tyne bridges, and a number of sculptures and art features to
admire along the way.~~~ Map: 1:5,000 newly mapped in 2018.
