Summer Train And Run
Updated 11/08/08
To fill the normal blank eventless period of the summer Newcastle And Tyneside Orienteers are promoting a series of low-key events with a difference.
The format will be a training exercise (10 to 20 minutes) plus a couple of short courses (2Km & 4-5Km) to practice on. Each event will focus on a particular skill to train as follows:
21/06 Newburn (NZ158655) Map Memory organized by Fred Miller 05/07 Gibside (NZ170582) Control Technique 1 Paul Boyles 26/07 Prudhoe (NZ086634) Control Technique 2 Patrick Smyth 30/08 Rising Sun (NZ299682) Compass & Pacing John Crosby Signed from NZ298684 Kings Road North, Wallsend Registration and starts will be from 9:45am to 10:30am. 27/09 QE II Park (NZ285892) Fine Navigation Colin Matheson 25/10 Stakeford (NZ259863) Relocation Adrian Barnes
Map memory:
The more information you can carry in your head means the less time you spend looking at the map (not less frequent checking, that would be a mistake !) and the greater chance you have of noticing you are going awry.Control Technique:
Most time wasted on a course is approaching and leaving the control. Hit them all first time, punch quickly and accurately and leave in the right direction for the next one and you are on your way to winning ! This is so important we are giving you two goes at this.Compass and pacing:
To stay on line and know how far you have gone, this is what you need. Even just knowing how far you have gone along a line feature (track, fence, stream etc.) can be important. How often do you get a chance to practice that ?Fine navigation:
To find the control you need to be able to spot every single feature on your route into the circle. A session to practice watching all the fine detail.Relocation:
Even using all the correct techniques the best of us still get misplaced (you're only "lost" if you have to be found !). Practice remembering what you have passed, checking what's around you and working out where you are without too much wasted time.
