Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport that exercises both the mind and the body. The aim is to navigate in sequence between control points marked on a unique orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time. It does not matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can run, walk or jog the course and progress at your own pace.
Orienteering can take place anywhere from remote forest and countryside to urban parks and school playgrounds. It's a great sport for runners, joggers and walkers who want to improve their navigation skills or for anyone who loves the outdoors.
In conjunction with the Nestlé Get Set Go Free promotion Newcastle and Tyneside Orienteers offer a free map pack (normally £2.50) for a permanent course administered by them or a free entry (non-members of British Orienteering only) to a scheduled orienteering event organised by them in exchange for a voucher awarded as part of the Get Set Go Free promotion
There are permanent courses set out at many Country Parks in Northumberland. Please note that the courses are unmanned and you participate at your own risk. The courses are listed on the events page, where you will also find coming fixtures. Order your Permanent Course map (stating area chosen and contact for reply) through our contact page (check Permanent Courses on the drop down menu) or just turn up to a scheduled fixture according to details linked from the events page,
Participants should note that Orienteering is an adventure sport, sometimes taking place in rough terrain and/or poor weather conditions. Whilst every effort is made to reduce unnecessary risk, personal safety remains the responsibility of the individual participant.
