Autumn/Winter LOP 2023/4 Tynemouth

    First of series of low key local Saturday morning events, in and around Tyneside, with a league to encourage participation and competition. Courses suitable for beginners and the more experienced wanting some training competition.

    Location: Northumberland Park, King Edward Rd, North Shields NE30 2ES ~ NZ360693 ///mole.stars.sooner ~ Google Maps

    Terrain: Urban park in valley. Some steps. Yellow course is within the park. Orange and Long Orange venture further to surrounding streets and (for Long Orange) to the riverside.

    Travel: Eastbound: A1058 Coast Road, right hand lane signed ‘North Shields’ (A1108), right at Billy Mill traffic lights, then left at first roundabout into Queen Alexandra Road. Proceed straight for 2 km, across two major road junctions, eventually past the Linskill Centre on the left. Turn left into Preston Avenue, just before Tynemouth Golf Club. Street side parking. Walk back past the golf club building to carefully cross King Edward Road: start at the north-west gate entrance to Northumberland Park.
    Westbound: King Edward Road leaves Tynemouth roundabout on A193 at Holy Saviour’s Church, Broadway: head westwards and park on left on this road by park railings. Alternatively, spaces may be available in next left residential street (Park Avenue) or next right Preston Avenue. The start is at the north-west gate entrance to Northumberland Park.
    Metro: Tynemouth Station (do not use Northumberland Park station). Head to station exit on west wide, northwards towards the Tynemouth roundabout then left down King Edward Road, past Dolphin pub to park on the left. 15 minutes walk. Please note that Tynemouth Station Saturday morning market will be operating making the station very busy indeed.

    Entry: Senior £4.00 Junior £2.00 Family £4.00. Entry on the day only.  Please provide exact change.
    Large groups should give prior notice, please.

    Courses: Yellow (1.4 km.) ~ Orange (2.4 km.) ~ Long Orange (5.0 km.).
    Maps ands Controls
    Sites will be marked with a miniature O sign and orange tape secured with a clothes peg. Markers will have a code letter in permanent marker to be written on the control card. Carry a pen.
    Electronic timing will be used for start and finish. All runners will be issued with a loan dibber which will be downloaded off site. Timing tickets will be issued at download.
    100 points for the winner of each course, 99 for second, 98 for third etc. Anyone running in a course above their class will get a bonus of 5 points (10 for 2 courses above) and, likewise, anyone running a course below their class will be docked 5 points (10 for 2 courses below).

    Facilities: Toilets: available next to the Glasshouse Tea Room in the centre of the park. Please support this park tearoom for hot drinks etc.

    Safety: Orienteering is an adventure sport. Risks have been assessed and mitigated as far as possible . However, participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event.
    Please bring your own requirement of water.
    All courses visit popular areas within the park, close to Tynemouth Station and on the Tyne riverside so please be considerate towards other users and be aware of playing children, dog walkers, cyclists, and the hazards of crossing busy roads on the longest course.
